How we verify

What Confirmed, Reported and Unverified mean, the standards every source has to meet, and how machine translation is handled.

What the labels mean

Every news story, myth page and hub on Oh My AI carries one of three labels. They describe how well we could check a statement, not whether we like it.

Confirmed

We read the primary source

We opened the original law, paper, court filing, statistics release or official page and it states the fact. Confirmed describes our check, not the future: a projection stays a projection and is called one, and a company’s claim about itself is not Confirmed.

Reported

Real source, source’s own claim

The source is genuine and official, but the claim is the source’s own and has not been independently checked. Typical examples: a company announcing a data center’s planned size, or its own estimate of its product’s energy use.

Unverified

We could not confirm it

We could not find or open a primary source for it. An Unverified claim is never presented as fact.

Where a page has mixed evidence, the label sits on each statement, not just on the page. See examples: data-center electricity (Confirmed figures, projections marked) and water per question (Reported, because the only measurement is the company’s own).

Sourcing standards

  • Primary sources first. Laws and regulations, official government and agency releases, statistics offices, peer-reviewed or preprint papers, court records, and a company’s own documents for facts about that company.
  • Every figure has a numbered citation that links to the page where we read it, with the source’s publication date and the date we checked it.
  • Measurements, projections and plans are kept apart. Projections are labeled as projections. Company plans and announcements are labeled Reported.
  • Our own arithmetic is marked as ours and shows the inputs.
  • No source, no number. If we cannot find a figure on a primary page, we leave it out rather than estimate it. Pages say what was left out.
  • No politics and no opinion in the facts. We report what laws, plans and data say, not whether they are good. Any opinion is labeled hitechmike’s take.
  • Dates. Pages show when they were last checked or reviewed. When a fact is fixed, the page and its date are updated and the change is recorded on the Corrections log.
  • Links. Internal links are checked automatically each time the site is built.

Machine-translation policy

Oh My AI is written in English, and the English text is the reference. Translations of news-story headlines and summaries are optional, automatic and never reviewed by a person.

  • Two routes. If your browser has a built-in translator, it is used and the text is translated on your device. Otherwise your browser asks this site’s server, which uses Cloudflare Workers AI. Only the story ID and language code are sent. See the privacy policy.
  • Checks before a translation is shown. The server rejects a translation that is far shorter than the English, written in the wrong script, contains stray text from another script, repeats itself, or changes the numbers. A rejected translation is not shown and the story stays in English.
  • Scope. Only story headlines and summaries are translated. Labels (Confirmed, Reported, Unverified), tags, search and source names stay in English, so the verification status never depends on a translation.
  • Reliability. Languages marked “beta” are less reliable. Do not rely on a translation for health, legal, financial or safety decisions; open the linked source.
  • Abuse protection. Server translation requests pass a Cloudflare Turnstile check, loaded only when you ask for a translation. Static pages are not affected.
  • Mistakes. Tell us about a bad translation at mike@ohmyai.ai with the story and language.

Hubs and the “last reviewed” date

The Data Centers, AI by Country and AI Timeline hubs list their sources at the bottom and show a “Last reviewed” date. Laws and programs change; a date shows when each statement was last read against its source. Capacity and investment figures that only appear in company announcements are Reported, and figures that we could not find on a primary page are omitted.

If we get something wrong

Write to mike@ohmyai.ai with the page and the source that shows the problem. Confirmed errors are fixed and logged on the Corrections log. You can also follow new stories by RSS feed.
